OUR SEPARATION (Blog Against Theocracy Part 1)

(A Poetic Justice Photomontage)

(click photomontage to enlarge)

The phrase "separation of church and state" is derived from a letter written by Thomas Jefferson in 1802 to a group identifying themselves as the Danbury Baptists. In that letter, referencing the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, Jefferson writes:

"Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church & State."

Another early user of the term was James Madison, the principal drafter of the United States Bill of Rights, who often wrote of "total separation of the church from the state." "Strongly guarded . . . is the separation between religion and government in the Constitution of the United States," Madison wrote, and he declared, "practical distinction between Religion and Civil Government is essential to the purity of both, and as guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States." This attitude is further reflected in the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, originally authored by Thomas Jefferson, but championed by Madison, and guaranteeing that no one may be compelled to finance any religion or denomination.

... no man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place, or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested, or burthened in his body or goods, nor shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief; but that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinion in matters of religion, and that the same shall in no wise diminish enlarge, or affect their civil capacities.

Another formal plea for separation of church and state in England, called Religious Peace: or, a Plea for Liberty of Conscience. was written to King James by a London citizen named Leonard Busher, a man later identified as an Anabaptist. In 1868, the renowned Baptist pastor Charles Haddon Spurgeon perhaps best summed up the separationist Baptist stand thusly:

Which shall we wonder at most, the endurance of the faithful or the cruelty of their tormentors? Is it not proven beyond all dispute that there is no limit to the enormities which men will commit when they are once persuaded that they are keepers of other men's consciences? To spread religion by any means, and to crush heresy by all means is the practical inference from the doctrine that one man may control another's religion. Given the duty of a state to foster some one form of faith, and by the sure inductions of our nature slowly but certainly persecution will occur. To prevent for ever the possibility of Papists roasting Protestants, Anglicans hanging Romish priests, and Puritans flogging Quakers, let every form of state-churchism be utterly abolished, and the remembrance of the long curse which it has cast upon the world be blotted out for ever.

OUR SEPARATION
a poem by thepoetryman

It is with slow strangling
that tongues wag of gods.
And that floods come their raging,
tumbling between valleys,
seizing what’s in font of them
and not what’s prepared to go.
Each tongue’s a star.
Behold the light
quaking against the teeth.
Behind them whirl grand dreams;
tiny gods treading the water,
holding tight to hovering rooftops,
seeing familiar parchment drown
next to a child’s stuffed animal,
its tiny eyes wet with grief
knowing it will float,
drift out to some sea
into a far-off port
worshipped by a child
wrapped in chains.

WEAPON

They didn't warn us of this growing up.
How could they?
They too had been sold deceit painted to look like gold.

We shall continue to wander off into the dark,
Lumbering through the sludge,
Leaving the whole thing as it was;
We’ll not be the last to ingest it.

We’ll stay kneeled behind the world,
Behind authorities stench,
Our noses filling with it-
For we are an obedient creature
Watching everything we’re here for disappear
And everything we should fear being painted gold!

We’re too busy warring-
We’re too busy dreaming-
We’re too busy scheming-
We’re too busy competing-
We’re too goddamned busy!

O never have we seen such indifference!
Never have we stared so eyeless,
Breathing in the stink of depravity,
Howling that our things are being confiscated,
Agape at the murder and rape of mankind,
Screeching of powers rush forward,
Of our being strapped to the slab of want,
Our freedoms turning nose skyward
As they plunge from the precipice we made,
Screaming of deadly chemicals and mushroom cloud!

Christ!
Can we not make our existence fit for love,
Not submissive to these spineless, lousy rogues
Hell-bent on ruin?
Not the way we’ve existed-
Not the way we’re now living
And will go on living until they say we’re not.
We’ve known all this time who's had the weapons
But we’ve no sense that we’re the filthy trigger…

HOLY ABYSS

Would you like to know what, in my opinion, is one of the main reasons we find this country seemingly plummeting toward the abyss?

Christian law school
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The title of the course (at the now
ABA accredited law school) was Constitutional Law, but the subject was sin. Before any casebooks were opened, a student led his classmates in a 10-minute devotional talk, completed with "amens," about the need to preserve their Christian values.
"Sin is so appealing because it's easy and because it's fun," the law student warned.

Yikes. This would be laughable... except for the fact that it's just so damned, unimaginably frightening. Same with this video...

Pat Speaks of State-Church Separation: The Big Lie
There is no such thing as separation of church and state in the Constitution. It is a lie of the Left and we are not going to take it anymore.-- Pat Robertson, address to his American Center for Law and Justice, November, 1993. Let's see, now: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." How could the prohibition against Congress making laws respecting an establishment of religion be anything but the separation of church and state?
They scream, "First Amendment." Of course, the First Amendment, as you and I both know, is a restriction on Congress.... So it really doesn't have anything to do with what you say or what I say, one way or the other.-- Pat Robertson, The 700 Club television program,
December 10, 1990, deliberately misrepresenting what it means by "Congress shall make no law" by omitting mention of the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments, and yet sniveling about the Supreme Court's state-church decisions.

Men and women out of the flames ascend
Rising like the cold grey breath of winter,
Praising "God" and life and death.

Their bones clack to Armageddon’s rhythm,
Their eyes perceive the Day of Judgment
Looming steady the bitter death of man.

Where is this rising of thy god?
Is it manifest in the blue?
Famine?
War?
Does it tread `neath the surging wave?

O! Bring out thy god and quench this thirst!
Summon thy god and feed this starvation!

O! Call unto it!
Have it burst forth and save the children!

Magnificent are men and women,
Humankind;
Mortal creatures and our gods.

TESTIFY

READ THE POEM +/-
Now the witnesses leave the murky plot.
The inflamed and the righteous quieted,
Their minds, dripping like oily rags.
These tools of empire thrash the soiled stripes.

In oily soldiers of self
Hope writhes unfilled.
The wail of these bludgeoners and
Scowling whores to money’s den
Are bent toward our end.

The world spins `round the hastened, scarlet flood,
Manacles clank `gainst the gruesome stones;
This is the spectacle
of our making.

And it is the rudder turned toward loss, and hunger
And terror, and this throbbing
Shaped by we the people
To the failure of our will, our freedom, our earth…

The inflamed and righteous are hushed,
Witnesses of their own dreadful spirit-
O! Let us mend this at once!
America must redeem herself;
Conquer nothing, torture not, and murder no one.
She must, before hatred holds mirror up to her ashen face,
Make a beautiful noise away from her doom.

Let us be witness to the Kingdom’s dream,
Let us not allow the final sound to be
The cloven-hoofed echo…
