NO MORE WAR

It needn’t conquer the world
to breathe in us,
wept the paint.

It needn’t strike the stiff and crafty strum
of a tyrant’s impatience,
mourned the brush.

It must turn its very foundation; humanity,
to free its fettered soul,
wailed the easel.

It first must conquer the self to invent an escape
above war’s red casualty,
moaned the canvas.

Peace will never be created through war's shrapnel
upon the scorching sand,
shrieked the art!

No more war...
No more war...
No more war...
No more war...
No more war...
No more war...

THE SOLDIERS WERE THERE...

...tattered rows of drained bone, hanging flesh,
Wounded limbs, lifeless eyes, all staggered with rage.
They lined the granite path that led to his appointed throne,
Not a word was spoken; the hush was violent enough.

He was not prepared to meet such blistering wrath,
The cracked and unsmiling faces, all with such dripping loss.
He was ill equipped and unready for their bony grief,
So he did the only thing he knew, he splintered a dreadful grin,

You’ve done America proud. You’ve served your country with honor.
The road was long, the fight, arduous, but you are home now and
We will honor you for your hard-won accomplishments.
The crow of death no longer waits on thee.

The granite was quite under the push of their bodies,
Their silence floating in the air like an old dog slumped
From the beatings of a gutless master. Warriors,
Whose illustrious hues were bleached from airless days,

Caught him unawares with such gruesome stillness.
As he sat, pondering the moment upon his throne,
Their vacant rumblings cried, Traitor! Traitor! Traitor!
So he did the only thing he knew, he splintered a dreadful grin.

The dead can’t make pretty speeches that echo more lies,
Or write stale accounts of war, or be heroes in a child's life.
They cannot lunge at us with rifles, or clank their bones
In protest against the walls of weapon factories.

THE ARTIST'S LITTLE BOY (Happy birthday, Ben Heine)

(A Poetic Justice Photomontage)

There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot, but there are others who, thanks to their art and intelligence, transform a yellow spot into the sun.
__Pablo Piccaso

Teach me to paint!
Teach me to paint the sun like you, daddy!

It’s better that your life be painted first, my child,
And from its color you might then paint the sun.

You mean like you?

No… I mean like you.

WHERE'S THE BEAUTY OF IRAQ?

First the storms… silence
Shards of glass, bone, blood
Where’s the splendor?
The soul of Iraq?
Have we forgotten;
The narrow lines
The pristine shape
The rightness
The beauty?

The land, sun, sky, waters;
Yes, then trees, mountains, waves
And rain, rain… the rain?
Faces of the children and mothers
Hands of the fathers and brothers
Backs of the aunts and uncles
Feet of the traveler
Ears of wonderment
Eyes of desire?

It comes into you, a violent flow
Resting near you, your craving, hope.
It sidles up to you, breathing.
Its child takes your hand
And leads you quietly there;
Standing before you, a sculpture
Paintings pirouette
Photographs smile
Poems enfold you.

First the storms… silence
Rubbles of art and story; beauty.
Iraq takes hold your heart
Leads you to the truth of her;
The people, the sand, the sky
The theatre, the dance, the dream
The pristine shape
The rightness
The majesty…

Have we forgotten?
