With an official seal it arrived
It’s contents shrouded in mystery
Hidden like our hearts, our weaponry.
Scanned and rescanned and checked
for a hidden and reprehensible text.
(Letters are handwritten or typed
formal communications, exchanges,
They came before faxes or email,
for those too young to recall.)
A chivalrous means of communiqué,
A sort of gentleman’s game of chess.
The great letters of our forefathers
Scribed with honor and statesmanship
Were delivered by a pony express!
(This was long before the four cylinder,
before the engines V-six or V-eight,
before the Hummer or even the Jag,
for those too green to assimilate.)
The contents of the letter’s not known,
But, rest assured, Bush it will perplex
And make our western cowboy absurd.
See, Mahmoud took Bush at his word
When “bring `em on” he roundly did flex!
(This was long after statesmanship had vanished.)
