Letters reveal horror of hostages
CAPTIVE
There were lesions.
Doom slanted his dull blade
Near the downcast eyes of heaven.
The country held dear to one another
In hopeful assembly, as
Letters
Arrived so freely
Plucked from the jungle
Where others remained shackled,
Weeping in bitter despair.
Come savior! Come country!
Come! Lift the head of heaven!
“I did not wish to drag myself through mud
because I couldn’t stand up.”
There was malaria.
Heartache pursed her keen lips
Upon the wet shoulders of paradise.
“This story isn’t new.” she whispered,
“They’ve been tethered for many years.”
Paradise shrugged, “As have we, my love.”
Come savior! Come country!
Come! Lift the head of heaven!
