THE SOLDIERS WERE THERE...

...tattered rows of drained bone, hanging flesh,
Wounded limbs, lifeless eyes, all staggered with rage.
They lined the granite path that led to his appointed throne,
Not a word was spoken; the hush was violent enough.

He was not prepared to meet such blistering wrath,
The cracked and unsmiling faces, all with such dripping loss.
He was ill equipped and unready for their bony grief,
So he did the only thing he knew, he splintered a dreadful grin,

You’ve done America proud. You’ve served your country with honor.
The road was long, the fight, arduous, but you are home now and
We will honor you for your hard-won accomplishments.
The crow of death no longer waits on thee.

The granite was quite under the push of their bodies,
Their silence floating in the air like an old dog slumped
From the beatings of a gutless master. Warriors,
Whose illustrious hues were bleached from airless days,

Caught him unawares with such gruesome stillness.
As he sat, pondering the moment upon his throne,
Their vacant rumblings cried, Traitor! Traitor! Traitor!
So he did the only thing he knew, he splintered a dreadful grin.

The dead can’t make pretty speeches that echo more lies,
Or write stale accounts of war, or be heroes in a child's life.
They cannot lunge at us with rifles, or clank their bones
In protest against the walls of weapon factories.

NUMBERS

(Ben Heine - Cartoons)
from

Dear George,

Just as the sight of crocuses peaking through the soiled snows of March are harbingers of spring, so is the dealing of the Terror Card the harbinger of another election cycle. Once again, you are trotting out the strategy that has kept you in office for so long: If you scare the chickens enough, they will vote for the fox.

It is a thing of beauty. First you create imaginary shadows, and then in every imaginary shadow you hide an imaginary terrorist skulking down Main Street America, ready to blow up the local soda shoppe where America’s clean-cut teenagers hang out.

Your Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell says it so, so it must be so. And we must believe it is so, and our faith must be perfect, untainted by doubt, because if our faith is not perfect and it we allow the 935 lies that led up to your Iraq enterprise plant to a seed of doubt in our minds, we may wonder if the next utterance that comes out of your administration’s collective mouth might not be lie number 936.

National Security demands perfect faith. Just as the Rapture shall come; so are droves of terrorists rowing across the Atlantic in route to Main Street. (MORE...)

NUMBERS NEVER LIE
a poem by thepoetryman

O, now your voice is that of truth?
What happened to yesterdays street lamp that the swimming fog
painted with terror,
and the plane upon the sky
with brown men wielding loss; what’s come of their design?
What of the bell ringing with freedoms magnificence
where freedom was and freedoms no more?
Where do you think these numbers fit, brandishing such menace?

O where is the mighty hero, the soldier child, the marine
whose breath wafted over the border pleading to pass on,
wailing in grief the loss of life in the sand
as talons lash his ankle to the very ground he guards?

These numbers speak a blood-spattered speech
and call forth an acrid air that fills the lungs
with its seed and it hemorrhages and bleeds
over your torture bending our will!

Why must you again with your slump of thievery
trudge upon our malleable expectation?
Why have you entered such dismal days
as to end our breathing?

To the apathetic hordes hearing, sensing nothing,
to the naked and dead calling their voices down,
to the mystified living worshipping your words,
to the angry and vengeful whose lion is pacing,
to the bitter and downtrodden without a voice,
to the hopeful and wishful locked away praying,
your belief’s as empty as its messenger.
Your savior’s a swaggering sham,
nine hundred and thirty-five...
Like dread he comes again!
Numbers never lie.

THE ARTIST'S LITTLE BOY (Happy birthday, Ben Heine)

(A Poetic Justice Photomontage)

There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot, but there are others who, thanks to their art and intelligence, transform a yellow spot into the sun.
__Pablo Piccaso

Teach me to paint!
Teach me to paint the sun like you, daddy!

It’s better that your life be painted first, my child,
And from its color you might then paint the sun.

You mean like you?

No… I mean like you.

BREATHING ART

(Ben Heine - Cartoons)

Ceaselessly giving.
Art opens inward
The generous spirit of the heart.

Art widens the eyes,
The soul,
Then seeks you within it.

Rigid and hot,
It needs freedom, faith
To consider where it’s taken you,

Like dipping your mind’s brush
Into the cleansing water,
Thoughts swim, breathing like fish.

Now given to, submerged,
Bathed in the shape of it,
What wrangles your soul?

If you find your breath full...
Think not of the artist’s truth,
Think but of your own;

Spirit and the heart of hope
Weep
And question why…

PITCHING PROVIDENCE

Bomber kills as many as 121 in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A suicide truck bomber struck a market in a predominantly Shiite area of Baghdad on Saturday, killing as many as 121 people among the crowd buying food for evening meals, one of the most devastating attacks in the capital since the war started.
The attacker was driving a truck carrying foodstuffs including oil and flour when he detonated a ton of explosives, destroying stores and stalls in the busy outdoor Sadriyah market, police said.
The late-afternoon explosion was the latest in a series of attacks against mainly Shiite commercial targets in the capital. No group claimed responsibility, but it appeared to be part of a bid by Sunni insurgents to provoke retaliatory violence and kill as many people as possible ahead of a planned U.S.-Iraqi security sweep.
Hours later, mortars slammed into several predominantly Sunni areas in Baghdad, killing at least two people and wounding nearly 20, police said.

pitching providence

“Now goddamnit, now, as the burning flesh is fresh in our head.
Lord knows we can’t miss our darling reality flick of ineffectuality.
O god forbid we peer beyond the shrub and see death-death-death.
Oh no, can’t have us considering the child’s blood on our hands.
That’d mean we’d need consider our own pitching providence.”
…muttered the rain on the limb-strewn streets as we flipped channels.

Yes! Son of a bitch! Yes! I said “our own pitching providence”!
I say it that one might sneer, snicker and scoff such silliness!

I say it that others might think,
“That guy’s fanatical!”
“That man’s off his meds! This is America!”
“The greatest country on earth!”
“Ours is the sopping land of liberty!”
“The kingdom of all things divine!”

Yes! O goddamnit! Yes! I shout it for the dim-witted inundated in lies!
I utter it for the delusional crouch-down-toad deriding the spirit to speak!
I declare it for it’s in front of us screeching, bloody and boiling!

Look! Look! There! Descending the stairs is this awful something!
This thing, it pours all the magnificence and misery down upon us!
Descending the stairway dripping with the fresh blood of others,
It comes down dripping the hopelessness wrought of greed and arrogance!
Look! Look goddamnit! In its arms it carries the vanishing world!

One-hundred and twenty!
One hundred and twenty lifted by the tall indignity of empire!
Lifted apart by those waiting on god to intervene on their behalf!

We are fools! It is not on our behalf that god shall the earth render still!
It is not on our behalf that the long and towering indignity carts the world!
It’s because of our dishonor that humanity needs such nurturing at all!
Our apathy rivals any in the goddamned history of fouled indifference!

“Now goddamnit, America. Do it now you red-lipped whore of free will.
Start praising your miserable god now, America, now, as the burning flesh is fresh on our hands and we scoff at this; our pitching providence...”
Muttered the rain on the limb-strewn streets as we flipped channels.
