REVISITING A MANIACAL MELODY

CIA chief believes Cheney almost wants U.S. attacked

O! Love at first sight in bleak day.
You’ve life’s gallant sun.
The arid tempest swoons;
Love. Hope. Joy. Doubt. Lust. Slaughter.
Blood’s staining authority.
The silver gorge croons to her,
Breathing deep, conjuring worship;
The grubby toothed grin of casualty.

“My love, may I have this dance?”
“Tis my honor most valiant knight!”
“Take my hand, my dear, and we shall.”
“Yes, my love.”

O! Life’s embittered perfection,
Love’s wish filled stain,
Let go this; your dreadful date
And curl your arms `round eternity
Heeding the smothered breath of thy god;
Hatred. Contempt. Red. White. Blue.
Blood’s staining authority;
The solvent spirit’s bloody weight!

UNDISCLOSED HISTORY

The Cheese Stands Alone
By Dana Milbank - The Washington Post
Tuesday, June 26, 2007

We'll make statements only today," President Bush announced to reporters yesterday as he sat with the Estonian president in the Oval Office.

No surprise there. Vice President Cheney's recent declaration that he is not part of the executive branch has prompted hard questions, and nobody in the White House has a good answer for why Cheney -- who hovered near Bush's desk while the president spoke -- had turned himself into a fourth branch of government.
The explanatory task fell to White House spokeswoman Dana Perino, whose skin reddened around her neck and collar as she pleaded ignorance during the daily briefing: "I'm not a legal scholar. . . . I'm not opining on his argument that his office is making. . . . I don't know why he made the arguments that he did."
"It's a little surreal," remarked Keith Koffler of Congress Daily.
"You're telling me," Perino agreed.
"You can't give an opinion about whether the vice president is part of the executive branch or not?" Koffler pressed. "It's a little bit like somebody saying, 'I don't know if this is my wife or not.' "
Give the flushed and flustered Perino credit for trying. The vice president had put her in an impossible position. Already under fire for his secretive ways, Cheney has refused to comply with an order governing the care of classified documents; his office concluded that the order does not apply because he is not "an entity within the executive branch."
That's quite opposite the argument Cheney made in 2001, when he said that a congressional probe into the workings of his energy task force "would unconstitutionally interfere with the functioning of the executive branch." Cheney has, in effect, declared himself to be neither fish nor fowl but an exotic, extraconstitutional beast who answers to no one.
As if to demonstrate his status as the fourth branch, Cheney left the White House yesterday and made his way to the Capitol, escorted by eight police motorcycles, three police cruisers, two armored limousines, and five SUVs and minivans packed with aides and armed Secret Service agents. Cheney spent all of six minutes on the Senate floor, fulfilling his legislative obligations as president of the Senate.
His task was simple -- swearing in a newly appointed senator, Republican John Barrasso of Wyoming -- and was designed to be foolproof. He had a brief parliamentary script to read, and a laminated card printed with the oath of office. But the executive-branch refugee showed himself to be equally unimpressed with legislative custom. Instead of reading the oath of office and having the new senator merely say "I do" at the end, Cheney ordered Barrasso to "repeat after me."
Barrasso, unprepared to utter the entire oath, got tripped up on the line about "mental reservation or purpose of evasion" -- and asked Cheney to repeat it. The fourth branch of government, his duties thus completed, applauded, left the floor and returned downtown in his motorcade. (See link above to read full article.)

From that moment, well before previous accounts have suggested, Cheney turned his attention to the practical business of crushing a captive's will to resist. The vice president's office played a central role in shattering limits on coercion of prisoners in U.S. custody, commissioning and defending legal opinions that the Bush administration has since portrayed as the initiatives, months later, of lower-ranking officials. UNDISCLOSED HISTORY

Deep beneath the aching ground of our state, writhing,
twisting in the blood soaked layer below the screams
of the tortured and weep-filled living flesh, subdued,
a powerful schemer hunkers down
within his coward’s cave,
cackling of the anguish wrought by his reign
and sneering unto himself and the fool.
Mountains majesty, amber waves of grain
Blown back of the voice of shackles
and ropes tightly bound to their pain…

O! The sand and dust walking over the sorrow-born, lifeless limbs
making chains with the wind around the hopeless, must weep…

Deep below, the schemer whispers, “I’m the king”
from out his sallow lips to messengers sworn to secrecy
while the bombs above fall void unto his ears.
Evoking now the quietude of tyranny’s frame
he brings, blaring, the monstrous memories of what men can do!
And as they each move within the spiritless cave
he bows unto them, knees bent in half worship
uttering “What fools these patriots be.”
And the bombs fall silent unto this horde
of deviant beasts hunkered with themselves
and the stench of wafting hell,
yet only one shadow is cast across the floor…

Deep thundering now rolls, callous and yellow
like unending parades of pride filled processions;
lockstep, closed mind, tight fisted, greedy and senseless;
marching in honor of tomorrow’s bereavement,
inventing a country’s God-spurned eternity
of falling, plummeting rockets red glare
tumbling down, down, down
to the echoes of the past…

O hubris fondling the earth,
filling placid waters and pawing the trees, come!
End this! Thrust thy spear through the breach,
surprise even the memory of monstrous history
that death has found them there…

ANOTHER (BAPTISM OF HASTE)

READ THE POEM +/-
Karl: But [British Prime Minister] Tony Blair recently said that the only sensible solution to this crisis is diplomacy. Do you agree with that?

Cheney: We hope that we can solve the problem diplomatically. The president has indicated he wants to do everything he can to resolve it diplomatically. That's why we've been working with the EU and going through the United Nations with sanctions. But the president has also made it clear that we haven't taken any options off the table.

Karl: Now, Tony Blair seemed to be suggesting that military action really isn't an option by saying the only sensible solution here is diplomacy. Is there realistically a military solution to this?

Cheney: I'm not going to go beyond where I am, Jonathan. As we've said, we're doing everything we can to resolve it diplomatically... but we haven't taken any options off the table.

These words glow dimly, palely, slowly
Upon this; our sweltering sphere,
In their imposing haste
They scurry near
Our worship.

The words descend too easily upon us
Baptizing our sodden counterfeit,
Whose dark black throat warbles
Puffed in contempt;
Our warring.

Conflicted of their malignant meaning
We, the congregation, bow down
And return again to madness;
Our fixed arrogance,
Our waste.

The discourse of our grand reprisal
Has yet to find its untidy rest
Within the bellicose shores.
"...we haven't taken any options off the table" ,
Its refrain.

Forebodingly we examine the hours
Of our vast encounter with death
And attend to the war cries
Of "
I'm not backing down."
Again and again and again and again.

O! Die away this your everlasting babble!
We’ve enough of your squalling!
It is not time to endure madness,
It is time to abscond,
Enter freedom!

These words glow dimly, palely, slowly
Upon this; our sweltering sphere,
In their imposing haste
They scurry near
Our worship.

FLAT WATER AND HUSKS

READ THE POEM +/-
Richard Bruce Cheney (born January 30, 1941) is the 46th and current Vice President of the United States, serving under President George W. Bush. Previously, he served as White House Chief of Staff, member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Wyoming, and Secretary of Defense. In the private sector, he was the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Halliburton Energy Services; he is still a major stockholder. SCARIEST MOMENT IN HISTORY> On June 29, 2002, he briefly assumed the powers and duties of the presidency as Acting President when Mr. Bush underwent a medical exam involving anesthetics.
Cheney was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, to Richard Herbert Cheney and Marjorie Dickey. As a child, he attended Calvert Elementary School before his family moved to Casper, Wyoming where he attended Natrona County High School. His father worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a soil conservation agent. He has a brother, Robert, and a sister, Susan. He briefly studied at Yale University, but left after performing poorly academically. He earned both a B.A. and M.A. in political science from the University of Wyoming. He would later start doctoral studies at the University of Wisconsin
In 1964, he married Lynne Vincent, his high-school sweetheart, whom he had met at age fourteen. Mrs. Cheney served as Chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities from 1986 to 1996. She is now a public speaker, author, and a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.
(More...)

It was from the flat water
And husks of Nebraska
With her sadistic winters
That loosed the skulking evil.

Writhing near the seats of appointed kings
It plays upon inhabitants
As if channeling Stradivari-claws,
And we, the quivering bow
Wrenched within its hold,
Sense the heartbeat of wickedness
Driving us awkwardly over horror.

It is this creature’s blackheart
That breathes within our wound,
A miserable thump away from Caesar’s fantasy,
The emperor of tyranny.

The tramping evil must not reign
For it shall quite likely be our end.

As with Caesar’s many campaigns,
Triumph choked in massive death,
So too has this beast wrenched its gutless,
Livid fingers over kingdom's child.

Far removed from the plains of home
It now breathes upon the abrasion
Slickly coursing over Mesopotamia,
Tossing, heaping its human devices
Upon the harsh climate of her capture.

Hovering too near the seats of kings
It gnaws at flesh toward its dawn.

SEPARATE INCIDENTS

READ THE POEM +/-
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Ten U.S. troops were killed in Iraq on Wednesday, a major blow on the same day a high-level panel in Washington recommended gradually shifting U.S. forces from a combat to a training role.
The bipartisan Iraq Study Group released recommendations for changing course in the country, saying
President Bush's policy in Iraq "is not working." The Iraqi government said the U.S. report did "not come as a surprise," and it agreed that Iraq must take the lead in its own security.
"The situation is grave, very grave in fact, and cannot be tolerated," Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh said on the pan-Arab satellite TV channel Al-Arabiya. "Absolute dependence on foreign troops is not possible. The focus must be on boosting the Iraqi security forces." -By KIM GAMEL, Associated Press Writer (

Rumbling capital.

Sounds of distant
Holidays’ ...booming.
God.

Cities long past their autumn.

Trees scraping
The squatting luminaries.
Burnt orange are the trees.

No pleasure in frigid lifelessness…

Dogs howl
The scowling moon.

Pitiless are the mongrels
Greedily devouring children.

THE BAPTISM OF HASTE

Cheney: "It's going to be a battle that will last for a very long time. It is absolutely essential that we stay the course."

These words glow dimly, palely, slowly
Upon this; our sweltering sphere,
In their imposing haste
They scurry near
Our worship.

The words descend too easily upon us
Baptizing our sodden counterfeit,
Whose dark black throat warbles
Puffed in contempt;
Our warring.

Conflicted of their malignant meaning
We, the congregation, bow down
And return again to madness;
Our fixed arrogance,
Our waste.

The discourse of our grand reprisal
Has yet to find its untidy rest
Within the bellicose shores.
"Long way from over",
Its refrain.

Forebodingly we examine the hours
Of our vast encounter with death
And attend to the war cries
Of "stay the course"
Enduring lies.

O! Die away this your everlasting babble!
We’ve enough of your squalling!
It is not time to endure madness,
It is time to abscond,
Enter freedom!

These words glow dimly, palely, slowly
Upon this; our sweltering sphere,

Cheney's enduring speech

"TINK...TINK...SPAT..."

CHENEY: Perception, if you will, that's created because what's newsworthy is the car bomb in Baghdad. It's not all the work that went on that day in 15 other provinces in terms of making progress towards rebuilding Iraq.

It was cold, unoccupied, lifeless;
Our emptiness traveling
In sparsely armored humvee;
Jarring and bitter, empty,
Insensible; our barrenness
`long side man's unraveling;
Fatigued, armed and dying.

BUSH: Footage of children playing or shops opening and people resuming their normal lives will never be as dramatic as the footage of an IED explosion. They're capable of blowing up innocent life so it ends up on your TV show.

It lifted the massive durable toward heaven,
Then bowed, bent and screeching, it fell.
Silence- or so it seemed,
A moment of solitude
In a globe of explosion and volley
Escalating with the Arab sun.

LAURA INGRAHAM, RADIO TALK SHOW HOST: To do a show from Iraq means to talk to the Iraqi military, to go out with the Iraqi military, to actually have a conversation with the people instead of reporting from hotel balconies about the latest IEDs going off.

The warriors within;
patriots, brothers, sisters;
One nation spindled through
The shell of molten metal’s blazing.
A ringing ear comes leisurely near
To sounds of lamentation for this;
Our numbed life’s shrieking.

KURTZ:What do you make of that comment about reporting from hotel balconies?

Tiny fragments of steel rain dropping
`round our flesh, spattering through
Horrors fabric, at once soaking it.
What? You’re imperceptible! Hush…
At first…and then it comes, spraying
Down upon executioner’s table;
Tiny sounds, “tink…tink…spat…”

LOGAN: Well, I think it's outrageous. …”tink…tink…spat” I have been out with Iraqi security forces over and over again. "tink…tink…spat” And you know what? When Bob Woodruff was out with Iraqi security forces and he was injured, the first thing that people were asking was, oh, was he being responsible by placing himself in this position with Iraqi forces? “tink…tink…spat” And they started to question his responsibility and integrity as a journalist. “tink…tink…spat” I mean, we just can't win. I think it's an outrage to point the finger at journalists and say that this is our fault. I really do. “tink…tink…spat” And I think it shows an abject lack of respect for any journalist that's prepared to come to this country and risk their lives. “tink…tink…spat”

KURTZ: I do want to point out that Laura Ingraham was in Iraq last month for eight days, and that was part of the reason for her appearance.

LOGAN: For eight days.
"tink…tink…spat; this, our faint life’s shrieking..."
